Today was a perfect day with great weather and wonderful kids. Everyone was excited to be their and even the adults were curious about things. My students told me that they had learned so much and enjoyed looking for crawfish the most. Everyone was so excited to be in nature which was just a very uplifting feeling. I also enjoyed having a little sister in my group who wanted to do everything her big brother was doing. It was cute and adorable to watch. I also did a lot of informing because they wanted to know every plant and bug that they saw. We saw a small skull which I was unsure of what animal it might be but I told them that we could make an educated guess about it and came up with a list of possible animals it might be. Over all this was just a fantastic day!
Over the weekend I watched "No Impact Man". I didn't know much about it going in and just thought it was a guy who was trying to not make an impact on the earth. I was pleasantly surprised. First I didn't realize that they were doing this in New York City which seems like a challenging thing to do. Without much sunlight because of the buildings and also not able to grow their own vegetables they have to think outside the box. I also loved the wife, who to me, seemed very real. She is who I think I am, a person who wants to try and have no impact but is also attach to consumer items. I also quickly realized that he was really the little impact man, since he did use a train occasionally and would throw a little bit of trash away.
What I took a way from this film though was that the point wasn't to make no impact on the earth so that the polar bears might live or that the ocean levels will stop rising. The point was to realize that their are other people in this world besides yourself. Someone in the world is drinking contaminated water, or living by a landfill. Some people are breathing horrible air and lots of people are getting cancer from chemicals. When you realize that what you do does not only hurt the environment but also the people, it makes it hit home more.
I truly enjoyed this fill, and I made my family watch it with me so that they could also be more aware of what we are doing to this earth.
