Nature Fest!

Friday:

Friday was all about Macroinvertabrates! We were expecting storms, so Tom opted for stations at the farmstead instead of a nature hike. The morning soon became a test of our flexibility skills! The students arrived thirty minutes early and left us little time to get acquainted with the days schedule. However, the extra time allowed us a short group hike through the wetland. The students were curious and we spotted some beautiful red winged black birds!

Each of us bio 340 students took a station and jumped right in. I have five groups of kiddos and we looked at macroinvertabrates under telescopes. For the first grade groups, we focused on the process. The students drew, described, and scooped up some critters! The day was trying, but learning was abundant.

Nature Fest:

Nature Fest was a blast! It started with some peaceful canoeing  and a yummy dinner with Stacy Squirrel! After dinner, some of my great friends from Goshen arrived. On Friday, we saw jupiter and the moon through a high powered telescopes, formed loaves and bagels, and built a shelter. Some of my friends decided to set up camp in tents but one of my friends wanted to test his nature skills and build a shelter for the night! I helped him set up a lean-to in a good patch without nettles or poison ivy! I was excited to use my newly found skills to show my friends around and provide them with some tasty edibles. On Saturday, I volunteered with the 5k, made a gourd bird house, and enjoyed some wild edibles. The weekend was full of fun with friends, exploring, and playing with kiddos! All in all, a great time.

Looks a little chilly to me...
