Day 3: Farm Maple City Chapel
This morning I woke up extra early to go bird banding with the Goshen College Ornithology Class, Jordan and Emily. This was a memorable experience since it was my first time going bird banding. For the time period that we were at Lucky's Landing we were able to watch Lisa Zinn band a Rose Breasted Gross Beak, Grey Cat Birds, Common Yellow Throat Warbler, male & female Yellow Warbler, Female Cardinal, and a Baltimore Oriel. (We also caught a robin but we didn't get to see it get banned because we had class)
When we arrived at Farmstead the Farm Maple City Chapel Students were driving down the long dirt path toward the barn parking lot. I knew right away that these students were excited to learn about nature because as we waited for the rest of the students to show up they were walking around looking at the various things around them. After the slideshow the group of students went dipping in the marsh in search of macro invertebrates. Once the students had their waders on, it seemed like nothing could stop them. Some students did fall into the water but they didn't really care. They did come out of the water for a few minutes but went right back in the marsh with wet clothes on. Paul offered the students dry clothes in the lab but one of the students cared more about identifying the invertebrate rather than changing his clothes. This showed me how much the students wanted to learn not only about the macro invertebrates but about science. The day was over after gathering methane gas from the marsh and lighting it on fire.
