Lush Life

It startled me today when I looked around and realized how much green has sprouted since we May-termers came to Merry Lea nine days ago. This week has been a stark contrast to the frigid temperatures that we first experienced to the 83 degree temperature of today. My focus was drawn downward to the dirt, insects, and small animals that we could find on the ground today since that is what most fascinated my group home-schoolers. On the hike back to Reith Village with Eastern Bluebird I could focus more on the whole scene that I was hiking through. It startled me that all around me was lush greenery. Two days ago the flowers on the Garlic Mustard plant were beginning to become visible, and we had mere buds on the plants. Now the horizon is filling up with a vibrant green landscape. It is as if the earth is trying to scream out, “every part of me is alive!”

A vine amazed me today. As I was hiking I noticed a crawling vine that managed defy physics. This vine came from the ground, crawled up a tree, then managed to jump five feet away to a tree directly above the pathway, and somehow connect to another tree that is seven feet away. It created a vine tunnel. I understand crawling vines from having a garden. However, the distance that this vine was able to conquer to attach to something else has me completely puzzled.
