Day 7: Can Shoot Poop out of its Butt

As the May 16, 2014 wet land group sat inside the garage meanwhile Paul paced the kitchen floor on his cellular telephone. It turns out that the bus drivers were not informed that they would stay until 6:00 p.m. What ended up happening was that all 75 Harrison Elementary fifth graders went to the rock cycle for the morning and then would go to the wetlands for lunch until departure.
I was assigned at the Esker Station with Tom at the Rock Cycle. This was my first time at the rock cycle and I got to see how Glaciers formed eskers, moraines and wetlands in Northern Indiana. The students were ready for lunch after three rotations and headed off to the wetlands. It was there were everyone ate lunch. Ryan and I gave the wetlands presentation and went well except that I informed the students that the dragonfly larvae shoot poop out of it's butt, but I quickly corrected myself and told them that they shoot water out. At the dipping stations the students loved to wade in the water even though it was cold and knew that some students had fallen previously. The "coolest" find was the leopard frog and the baby painted turtle. After the thirty minute hike with the students they were ready to eat dinner, canoe and play a game. By this time it was only Erin, Cassidy, Stacy, Jordan and I working the Canoes. The five of us kept the students seated on the canoes and gave them instructions on how they should paddle if they wanted to get to the middle of the marsh. At the end of the day even though we were tired I had fun cleaning up with Erin, Stacy, Cassidy and Paul. We cooked organic hotdogs and smores over a fire Cassidy made and ate organic chips.
