I am a secondary education major.
When I heard that pre-schoolers were coming I wasn't looking forward to it. I am very plainly just not good with the young crowd. I don't know what it is. I remember walking to school and seeing them yell, run, hit, scream, etc. That image came into my head when deciding which age group I would like to teach. Kids also seemed scared of me at times for an unknown reason. I don't think I come off as intimidating, right? Anyways, all things added up, I woke up looking to get through the day quick and painlessly.
Come to find out, these little ones were from Trinity Day Care, which is right beside my prime running loop. Knowing that they were from a church classroom gave me a little comfort. Nevertheless, they are still young and full of energy! Or so I thought...
Separating into groups, I was put with Jordan and stuck with Abby (just kidding!) and we had 4 kids with one chaperone. To my surprise, they were very shy at first. I believe that was because they didn't know us. After 10 minutes, we had everyone in the group very excited. We found deer tracks almost immediately and they continuously looked for them the rest of the day. They were also intrigued by walnuts and no matter how many they found, they got equally excited about each one. Because this was a shorter trip with the kids, I am going to skip to the vernal pond activity. We, surprisingly, had no problem with the kids touching/squishing the critters we pulled out of the pond.
Negatives:
- Two kids crashed into each other. (side note, one of them warmed up to me after this...kind of cute)
- Too many of us leading the group.
- Cold :(
Overall, not as bad as I thought it would be. Great day to get us used to leading the group and get a little more familiar with the trails.
