Day Four: Churubosco

On Friday May 9th, 2014 half of the Biology 340 class met at the Learning Center to greet a group of kindergartners from Churubosco Elementary. I was still anxious because it was my second day teaching alone and because they were kindergarten students. I soon realized that the only thing I needed to worry about was the weather. The only time it rained on us was was in the first five minutes and then it stopped after a couple of minutes. It was almost our turn to explore the vernal pond so I tired to guide us on the path that lead to it. What ended up happening was that I took the wrong turn and got lost for a few minutes until we reached one of the markers at the end of the trail. For that time period we ran into a hiker that had seen a snapping turtle but unfortunately the turtle wasn't there anymore. When my group reached the vernal pond, we didn't find anything for the first few minutes. The students were really disappointed until I saw Ryan and I asked him if he was finding anything in the pond. He helped me out and the students started to find various invertebrates including an almost grown Predaceous Diving Beetle larvae. The students washed their hands and ate their lunch while Paul and I got the straw ride ready for the students. When the students were out and about Jordan and I suited up for our famous puppet show The Hungry Caterpillar. The students departed as we waved fair well and then cleaned up the Learning Center.
