On Friday we had are long day with the 5th graders,
and at first I was not excited about it. I was concerned that I would get
tired half way through the day, and couldn't imagine how it was going to go.
I think I probably would have been tired of it had I stayed at the rock
pit all day, but the fact that the bus drivers made a mistake and took everyone
to the rock pit and then to the farmstead, ended up being the best idea.
I loved that I was able to teach the rock pit in the morning and also help
out with the wetland project in the afternoon. I felt like with the
change of scenery it went better than I expected.
The kids were just outright wonderful and I
appreciated their enthusiasm that lasted all day long. Even on the nature
walk where we couldn't find any frogs or turtles, they loved that they found
tons of snails that would eventually crawl across their hand if they stood
still. They even seemed to love the PowerPoint.
With such a great day, I have to say my favorite
part was the canoeing. I loved how terrified they were because some of
them haven't canoed before, and at first struggled. By the end though
they all seem to catch on to it and were able to canoe around most of the
wetland. It was just amazing to seem them have fun and how quickly they
picked the skill up.
Over all it ended up being a great day, and it was nice to end it with a
warm fire, hotdogs and s'mores.
