Today actually ended up being a
great day. A couple of us decided to
take a walk along the Millrace but we just went through the woods. As we were identifying as many trees and
plants we could we noticed all the different birds and their sounds. We decided to sit in the observation area and
see how many we could identify. We tried
but quickly realized that we did not know are birds as well. As we were struggling to identify nests and
sounds we noticed a group of people with binoculars coming off the trail. We assumed they must be birdwatchers and
decided to go talk to them to see if they could help identify the birds we were
seeing. As we approached them with our
question they were so excited to take us around and show us different birds, we
ended up hanging out with them for about an hour.
The one
lately told me that birdwatchers love to share their knowledge, especially to
young college folk like us. They opened
are eyes up to so many different species that I have never paid attention to
before. It was assume how a 71 year old
man could look up in a tree locate the bird and name it before even looking in
his binoculars. They invited us to come
with them every Wednesday at 8am starting at the Reith center.
This was
such an awesome experience and it was great to get to know people who were just
as enthusiastic as we were about nature but with birds more than plants. This ended up being a great day. I also took some pictures of a purple
trillium, which I have never seen yet, an interesting birds nest that was built
on the ground (killdeer?), and a May apple that bloomed its flower.
