Day Three: Chandler Second Grade

On Wednesday we had second graders from Chandler Elementary School!  This was my first day teaching solo.  I was a little nervous but that quickly disappeared.  I had a group of about 11 second grade students and three parent chaperones, two dads and a mom.  They were very enthusiastic.  I could tell from the moment this group was assigned to me that it was going to be great.  When I was having the students think of nature names I had a hard time helping them think of names for certain letters.  The two dads were so on top of things; they had so many name suggestions for the students.  Once everyone had a name, we went down the lane to look at the groundhog hole, and the decomposing deer.  However, we hardly got past the groundhog hole when I heard my students shouting for me.  They said that they had found a snake!  I went to where they were to see this snake and it turned out to be a five foot long black rat snake.  It was huge!  It was really neat, but I didn't really want anything to do with it...I am not over my fear of snake quite yet.  One of the dads in my group came over, picked up the snake, made sure it was chill, and then started telling the students all about the snake. He then showed them how to pet it  and let them take turns petting it.  After that, he let them put the snake around their necks.  After awhile, we moved on so we could see everything else.

The students were amazing.  They were so intigued and into finding everything.  They were very observant and they wanted to know what everything was.  It was also really great to have the two dads that were so knowledgeable.  David knew a lot about nature, so when I wasn't talking or doing an activity with the students he often pointed out things that he knew.  I learned a lot from him and I am planning on using some of the information and teaching techniques that I observed.  The other father did a really great job at helping keep the students together and keeping the boys who wanted to run ahead close so that they all got to hear everything.  It honestly just worked out so well.  We saw turtles, a frog, and a turkey vulture.  I really don't have anything negative to say about my group that day.

It was Ryan's birthday and Liz made cheesecake.  We had a mini party in the kitchen for him late that night.  It was really fun, and he really appreciated it.  Earlier that day, Ryan talked me into holding Don at the learning center.  I was really nervous,
